What is server virtualization in IT terms and how will it help the company and ROI return in investment? One of the most talked about IT term right now is server and hardware virtualization. What is this? This is a way to reduce your servers hardware maintenance cost, servers administrative time, increase redundancy protection for your servers, reduce your company's data center power consumption, reduce your data center's electrical consumption, increase your server(s) disaster recovery response time, increase your servers monitoring sensitivities, and much much more. Those are the benefits. But there are also disadvantages which I had also faced during my work with VMWare application and the VM servers. If the ESX server or servers which are the main servers holding the virtual servers (VMs) are down, then ALL the servers will be effected. Maintenance of the ESX servers will effect all servers in the ESX server being maintained and other VMs in other ESX servers as well. This is so because, the VMs in the ESX server being maintained will be moved to other ESX servers and thus will increase the load of the other Active ESX servers. And slowing down the other VMs' performances. Microsoft DO NOT fully or upfront support Microsoft servers or applications running in other company's virtualization platform at the moment. This was related over by Microsoft premium support staffs themselve. As they are afraid that there might be compilcation involved.
